Honda Odyssey

Honda Odyssey

Used 2007 Honda Odyssey

If you’d rather be driving a nice sedan but you have a family, a dog and a load of luggage to haul on vacation, the new Odyssey makes for a livable compromise. With all its nifty features, some of your friends may even think it’s cool.

If you don’t like the traditional minivan look, about the only choices left are Nissan’s spacey Quest or the sporty Dodge Grand Caravan. Bargain shoppers may be put off by the high price tag and limited ability to deal.

Used 2007 Honda Odyssey Expert Review

Dads will tell you the best vehicle to transport the wife and kids is a big, burly SUV, but Moms know better. Despite its less-than-macho image, the minivan is still the best family transport ever invented. Large sliding side doors make for quick and easy exits, while a low and level cargo floor means minimal muscle is required when loading. If a minivan is in your future, there are a number of makes to choose from, and at the top of that list is the Honda Odyssey. Revered for its spacious interior, powerful engine, comfortable ride and exceptional safety rating, the Odyssey leaves little room for criticism. About the only deterrent to purchasing an Odyssey may be its high price and limited availability.

Driving the Used 2007 Honda Odyssey

One of the goals of every new minivan is to deliver a car-like driving experience. If the car in that comparison is a large sedan, the Odyssey succeeds on some levels and comes close on others. With plenty of horsepower and usable torque, the Odyssey moves quickly from a stop and easily merges with traffic. Once moving, the ride is smooth and well-controlled, even if rougher roads don’t go unnoticed. While few will call its performance inspiring, the Odyssey brakes and corners with a capability some may find surprisingly good for a vehicle of its proportions, and the strong engine can get you quickly back to cruising speed.

Favorite Features

In-Floor Storage
A carpeted panel in the floor in front of the second-row seat lifts to reveal a compartment big enough to swallow the available eighth seat. When you need the room for something else, an optional Lazy Susan makes it easy to access items that might otherwise require a reach.

Run-Flat Tire System
Not only will Michelin’s PAX tire system let you drive safely up to 125 miles without air in the tire, we thought the Odyssey Touring model we drove featuring the system actually rode smoother than the models on the standard tires.

Used 2007 Honda Odyssey Interior

There are plenty of innovations worth noting inside the Odyssey, as well as a couple of surprises. Honda engineers have made the third-row seat more accessible, thanks to sliding second-row seats. The third-row seat is also split on a 60/40 bias and very easy to fold flat into the floor. The second row features power windows plus optional twin captain’s chairs and an auxiliary eighth seat that stores neatly, when not needed, in a new in-floor storage compartment.

Used 2007 Honda Odyssey Exterior

Rather than pushing beyond the expected limits of minivan styling, the third-generation Odyssey emerges as a refined version of its former self. Honda’s designers have conceived an Odyssey that is both sleeker and more sophisticated than the previous generation. Perhaps because of added width, it also seems to have a more secure visual stance. Appealing features such as available power sliding side doors and a power rear liftgate bolster the Odyssey’s desirability.

Used 2007 Honda Odyssey Standard Features

Every Odyssey (LX, EX, EX with Leather and Touring) includes the disappearing third-row seat, in-floor storage, CD player and cruise control. Standard safety features include frontal and side airbags up front, three-row side-curtain airbags and Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control. The standard 3.5-liter VTEC engine gives way to a similar, higher-mileage i-VTEC engine in the top two models.

Used 2007 Honda Odyssey Options

Features available only on select trim levels or as stand-alone options include the stowable eighth seat, removable Lazy Susan storage system, leather seating, power sliding doors, six-disc in-dash CD player, 360-watt stereo, higher-mileage i-VTEC engine, power moonroof, nine-inch rear DVD entertainment center, plus a navigation system with voice recognition and an integrated rearview camera. Available only on the premium Touring model are a power tailgate, memory driver’s seat, power adjustable pedals, front and rear parking sensors and a run-flat tire system.

Used 2007 Honda Odyssey Engine

Until someone drops a V8 into a minivan, the Odyssey’s 244-horsepower V6 is the most powerful engine in the class (although the Nissan Quest offers nearly as much horsepower and more torque). The Odyssey’s 3.5-liter V6 is a solid piece of work. Strong, quiet and fairly fuel-efficient in this class, its performance attributes are only enhanced by its bulletproof service and repair history.

3.5-liter V6
244 horsepower @ 5750 rpm
240 lb.-ft. of torque @ 5000 rpm (LX and EX), 240 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpm (EX-L and Touring)
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25 (LX and EX), 19/26 (EX-L and Touring)

How Much Does the Used 2007 Honda Odyssey Cost?

The least expensive Odyssey is the LX, which has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $26,240. The EX with leather, DVD and navigation is $35,490, while a Touring with navigation tops out at $39,690. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows consumers are paying about $1,800 over dealer invoice for the base LX, and close to $2,000 over dealer invoice for the Touring. The Odyssey’s pricing may seem high, but keep in mind that over a five-year period it holds its value better than the Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Grand Caravan, Kia Sedona, Pontiac Montana, Buick Terraza, Nissan Quest, Ford Freestar and even the Toyota Sienna.

2007 Honda Odyssey Review

from the Cars.com expert editorial team

The Cars.com staff walks you through their Top 10 Tailgating Features.

Vehicle Overview
The 1999 – 2004 generation of Honda’s front-wheel-drive Odyssey was a class leader. For 2005, the minivan received a major redesign in Honda’s attempt to leapfrog the growing competition. It carries on into 2007 with minimal changes, including a tilt/telescoping steering wheel and tire pressure monitoring system for all trim levels, plus two new exterior colors.

The Odyssey has a foldaway third-row Magic Seat and a stowable PlusOne seat in the second row. Side curtain airbags protect occupants in all three rows, and an electronic stability system is standard. The windows in the sliding doors can be partially opened.

Four trim levels are offered: LX, EX, EX-L and Touring. The top two models use a Variable Cylinder Management version of Honda’s 3.5-liter V-6, which shifts automatically between six- and three-cylinder operation in response to driving conditions. A regular V-6 goes into the LX and EX.

The Touring model is available with a DVD entertainment system; the system is also available in EX-L models for 2007, but only in combination with the navigation system. XM Satellite Radio is standard in Touring models, and the EX-L gets a leather-trimmed steering wheel. Odysseys are built in Alabama.

Exterior
Built on a 118.1-inch wheelbase, the Odyssey measures 201 inches long overall. All models have dual sliding side doors, and all but the LX have power operation on both sides. Pulling the door handle halts the power doors, and a power lift. Show full review

Touring models use Michelin PAX run-flat tires. A power moonroof is standard on EX-L and Touring minivans. Nimbus Gray Metallic and Dark Cherry Pearl are new exterior color options for 2007.

Interior
Seating for seven occupants consists of two bucket seats in the first and second rows and a third-row 60/40-split bench that folds into the floor. EX and EX-L models seat eight people thanks to a removable center seat in the second row that can stow into a recessed compartment, which can be used for storage when the seat isn’t stowed. A Lazy Susan under-floor tray holds miscellaneous items in Touring models. Adjustable pedals are available in Touring models, and the gearshift lever sits on the instrument panel. For 2007, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel is standard for all trims, and there is a center pocket coin holder.

A DVD-based rear entertainment system, available on EX-L models and standard on Touring models, uses a 9-inch screen. Honda’s navigation system operates with voice recognition, can respond to 637 commands, and understands street names, numbers and destinations.

Under the Hood
Honda’s 244-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 teams with a five-speed automatic transmission. In EX-L and Touring models, the Variable Cylinder Management V-6 switches operation automatically between three and six cylinders. Both engines generate 240 pounds-feet of torque, but at slightly different engine speeds.

Safety
Side-impact and three-row side curtain airbags, all-disc antilock brakes and traction control are standard, as is an electronic stability system. A tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all trim levels.

Driving Impressions
Exuding excellence, the Odyssey is energetic, quiet, capable and easy to drive. Although the Odyssey nearly meets Honda’s Euro-sedan handling claim, its steering isn’t quite as precise and requires a slightly heavy touch.

Slight corrections are needed on straightaways, but body lean in curves is minimal. With its comparatively taut suspension, the Odyssey’s ride is a bit firm, but it exhibits near-instant recovery over bumps.

For a minivan, acceleration is wholly satisfying, though short of startling. It’s impossible to discern when operation moves between three and six cylinders with the Variable Cylinder Management engine. Transmission shifts are crisp, quick and usually inconspicuous. The voice-recognition navigation system is simply amazing.

Load It Lets Go. — Over all, I would recommend this to the average family. This has been a very reliable family vehicle and look forward to many more trips on her. Great resale value as well. No complaints here. With the third row being store and go, cargo, the flexibility is great. I never ran out of storage space. with all sets taken out, can fit a 8×10 plywood. You cant ask for anything more. The automatic door and rear cargo openers is a life saver when going to the grocery stores or transporting little ones.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: tons of cup holder, good entertainment system, great camping and all around family vehicle. Tons of cargo space. Its a beast

Cons: On some model, when eco mode comes on, you feel a vibration from the motor. It can be annoying, but other than that its a great family car.

Awesome Economical Family Vehicle! — Great family vehicle. Looks great inside. Love the reclining seats. Awesome storage all over great storage in back! Awesome gas mileage. Seats eight and drives smooth. Low maintenance is awesome. Reclining seats for carseats is a great plus! Every family should own an oddysey!

Pros: Gas economy, comfort, style, storage

Cons: 0 this vehicle is great!

Excellent Minivan — Overall an excellent family vehicle. Extremely user friendly, and convenient to use when you have two or more kids. Third row is a big plus. Maintenance is not very expensive but the MPG can be a little bit better. I love it for overall performance, looks, reliability.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Reliable, easy to drive, very convenient and spacious.

Cons: High MPG

Recall Machine — Does what it was designed to do , haul lots of people comfortably. The original PAX tire were an expensive mistake by the design engineers. Honda electronics lack significantly behind other car manufacturer. I need eight more words to complete the review.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Plenty of room. Most maintenance complete via various recalls

Cons: Around town gas mileage is less than desirable

Reliable — Never, ever had an issue with this van. When you maintain them well they will last forever. The only thing I ever replaced were the tires. Good gas mileage and very roomy for a family of six. The sliding doors and heated seats are great features.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Handles well, very roomy. The model years older than 2011 have the best body style.

Cons: The EX-L did not have a power tail gate door in 2007.

Best Bang For The Buck — Drove this van from Alaska to Florida and it never hiccupped. Minimal maintenance and only had to have recalls done to the vehicle. Getting ready to do the timing belt etc in the next year or so. It is the best car we’ve ever owned.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Most maintenance free car we’ve ever owned

Cons: loud to drive, especially on concrete interstates

Maybe As Good As A Minivan Can Get —

As vans go, this one is great. It seems to have the interior space of a big gas-guzzler like a Sequoia or Suburban, but with good fuel economy. Three of the six cylinders are deactivated when you are cruising at steady speed. Even at 80 mph, the “Eco” light comes on, telling you that you are doing it with three cylinders. It can jump out into the left lane and accelerate up a mountain pass when you need it to. No problems maintaining speed even at 9,000 ft altitude. Great for camping and ski trips. Great in snow if you put some snow tires on it. The twin power sliding doors were a novelty a few years ago, but they seem essential now. I put some WeatherTec mats in it, so I’m not worried about the carpet when hauling sloppy ski gear, plants from the nursery, or bikes. This is just a really solid car, no reliability issues and very few annoying ticks. I’m over 80,000 miles with little more than the usual preventative maintenance items, oil changes, brakes and tires. The struts were replaced around 75,000 miles and the power steering pump was serviced or replaced for free on a recall. OK, I’m itching to buy a really cool looking convertible, but this thing is just far too practical to give up in exchange for a little ego boost.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Incredibly practical and reliable.
Versatile seat configurations for hauling passengers or for hauling large items.
The leather interior is pretty luxurious. You forget you are in a minivan.
Sound system rocks.

Cons: There is a limit to how cool you can look in this car.
No easy MP3 jack or USB. (you can run RCA plugs from waaay in the back to the front though.)
